About Vicki Thomas
Vicki Thomas has artwork in collections around the world, including the prestigious Highgrove Florilegium, a permanent record of the flora in HRH Prince Charles’s garden in England. She has recently had artworks selected for two other Florilegia, one on wildflowers of Transylvania, also a project for the Prince’s Foundation, the other for Sydney’s Royal Botanical Gardens, and is featured in their publication. Her work was shown at the 12th International Exhibition of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Illustration in the USA.
The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, regularly features Vicki’s paintings of South African flora. In addition some of her works were in exhibtions of the collection elsewhere, e.g. The Smithsonian (USA), Japan and Italy. Dr Sherwood has selected several of her works for her books on contemporary botanical art.
Vicki has had many of her scientific illustrations published in books and botanical journals around the world, including the oldest floral publication Curtis’s Botanical Magazine. Vicki illustrated over 60 species for the monograph on Southern African Plectranthus, written by Ernst van Jaarsveld and has work in Graham Duncan’s The Genus Lachenalia. In September 2016 her work was included in a Phaedon publication: Plant. Exploring the Botanical World.
She has gold and silver medals from the Kirstenbosch Biennale Exhibitions and served as a judge on later shows. In 2016 she curated the successor to these exhibitions at Kirstenbosch on behalf of BAASA, called “Plant”. At the same time a clothing range used her botanical images to create a range of clothing.
Vicki regularly teaches scientific illustration at Stellenbosch University for the Honours Illustration programme, and privately at her home in Bettys Bay. In the past she has given classes at the University of Cape Town’s Summer School, in the UK and around South Africa. She is a founder member of the Botanical Artists’ Association of Southern Africa and a past Chairperson.
